Informant effort expenditure impacts young children's learning, eye gaze, and trust

چکیده
Abstract: Recent research has suggested informant trust is an important factor in preschoolers’ observational learning. This poster will present data from an ongoing study examining if 3.5to 6.5-year-old children (current n=24) relate perceptions of effort and trust. Children watched two informants solving problems using different solutions, exerting either high or low effort. Children’s eye gaze, trust of each informant, and learning from informants were measured. There were no significant differences in trust of the two informants, but children were significantly more likely to learn the solution demonstrated by the high effort informant, t(23) = 2.161, p = 0.041. High effort informant trust was also significantly related to time spent looking at the high effort informant, r = 0.675, p < 0.01. These findings indicate children are more likely to watch informants who exert high effort and are more likely to use those solutions when faced with a novel problem.

Epistemic Trust and Education: Effects of Informant Reliability on Student Learning of Decimal Concepts.
The epistemic trust literature emphasizes that children's evaluations of informants' trustworthiness affects learning, but there is no evidence that epistemic trust affects learning in academic domains. The current study investigated how reliability affects decimal learning. Fourth and fifth graders (N = 122; Mage = 10.1 years) compared examples from consistently accurate and inaccurate informa...
متن کاملIn the absence of conflicting testimony young children trust inaccurate informants.
The present research investigated the nature of the inferences and decisions young children make about informants with a prior history of inaccuracies. Across three experiments, 3- and 4-year-olds (total N = 182) reacted to previously inaccurate informants who offered testimony in an object-labeling task. Of central interest was children's willingness to accept information provided by an inaccu...

The extent to which young children monitor and use the truth of assertions to gauge the reliability of subsequent testimony was examined. Three- and 4-year-old children were presented with two informants, an accurate labeler and an inaccurate labeler. They were then invited to learn names for novel objects from these informants. The children correctly monitored and identified the informants on ...

Across three studies, we investigated whether 4-year-olds would trust a previously reliable informant when learning novel morphological forms. In Experiment 1, children (N= 16) were presented with two informants: one who correctly named familiar objects and another who named them incorrectly. Children were invited to turn to these informants when learning novel labels and morphological forms. T...

Gaze direction can be used to rapidly and reflexively lead or mislead others' attention as to the location of important stimuli. When perception of gaze direction is congruent with the location of a target, responses are faster compared to when incongruent. Faces that consistently gaze congruently are also judged more trustworthy than faces that consistently gaze incongruently. However, it's un...
